New Prospect Cemetery began in 1870 in the rural community once known as Scruggs. The oldest documented burial was that of Elizabeth Scruggs (1820-1870). Homesteaders Robert Alexander Craig and his wife Martha Jane Freeland donated land for a church and graveyard. The cemetery contains more than 100 unmarked graves, including those of pioneer settlers, many children, and veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Maintained by descendants of those buried there, it continues to serve the nearby community.
