Dodger Stadium, opened in 1962 in Los Angeles’s Elysian Park area, is the home of the Dodgers, the oldest Major League Baseball stadium west of the Mississippi, and the world’s largest baseball stadium by seat capacity. Built in Chavez Ravine after Walter O’Malley moved the club from Brooklyn, it rose on land tied to the canceled Elysian Park Heights housing project and the forced displacement of mainly Hispanic residents in the Battle of Chavez Ravine. Privately financed and engineered on a massive scale, it has hosted major baseball and other sporting events while remaining deeply linked to Los Angeles’s postwar growth, redevelopment conflicts, and identity.
