Old Hannastown in Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania, preserves the remains of a frontier settlement founded around 1769 by Robert Hanna along Forbes Road west of the Allegheny Mountains. In the 1770s it became Westmoreland County’s first seat and the meeting place of the first English courts west of the Alleghenies. Growing from Hanna’s tavern into a small but important community, it also became a center of boundary conflict and Revolutionary politics, where local colonists adopted the Hanna’s Town Resolves in 1775. In 1782 Seneca warriors with a small British force destroyed the town, which never fully recovered, though archaeology has since uncovered its structures and vast numbers of artifacts.
