Elisha, Henry, James H., and Richard Morris enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 9, 1862, and served in Company G, 2nd South Carolina Artillery for the duration of the war. They were farmers who owned large tracts of land, and the Morris families donated much of the land for the South Bound Railroad. The depot was located on Richard Morris's land and was named Hammond. A town grew around the depot and was incorporated by the South Carolina Legislature on December 23, 1891. A post office was established on October 1, 1892, called Olar in honor of Richard's daughter, Olar. On December 24, 1894, the South Carolina Legislature approved changing the town's name from Hammond to Olar to match the post office. The four Morris brothers, their families, and close family connections organized the Baptist Church on October 11, 1892, and the first school operated on Morris land.
