Cache Creek Wilderness in Lake County, California, protects 27,245 acres of rugged hills, meadows, cliffs, and stream canyons centered on Cache Creek. Added to the National Wilderness Preservation System in 2006 and later included in Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, it is notable for more than 30 miles of California Wild and Scenic River habitat, unusual serpentine soils, and specialized native plants including rare species. The area supports bald eagles, California’s second-largest herd of endemic tule elk, and other wildlife. Archaeological remains of a large Hill Patwin village occupied around 11,000 years ago also give the landscape a deep human history.
