A dark rock formation jutting from the hillside is one of many rock shelters in the Chattahoochee River Valley. With a sweeping view of the river, it afforded basic refuge from the elements. People have used these natural overhangs as temporary shelters for centuries. Evidence of occupation here dates to the Woodland period, from 1000 B.C. to A.D. 900.
