In 1828, at age 19, Abraham Lincoln and Allen Gentry made Lincoln’s first flatboat trip to New Orleans from Old Lower Landing. There he saw slaves sold and said, “If I ever get a chance to hit that thing, I’ll hit it hard”. In a very real sense, the Emancipation Proclamation that Lincoln issued in 1863 might be said to owe its origin to this flatboat trip.
