Luxor Peak is a 7,420-foot mountain in Pershing County, Nevada, in the Selenite Range of the Great Basin Ranges. The range’s name comes from selenite, a form of gypsum, reflected by the large Empire gypsum quarry below the mountain’s west side. Luxor Peak is the second-highest summit in the range and rises sharply above the surrounding terrain, with the west slope climbing about 2,000 feet in just half a mile. Along the southern edge of the Black Rock Desert, its elevation creates a cold desert climate with hot summers, cool nights, and winters marked by mild days and often much colder nights.
