Selenite Peak is a 7,115-foot summit in northwestern Nevada’s Great Basin, rising from the Selenite Range on Bureau of Land Management land near Gerlach and Empire and overlooking the Black Rock Desert. Though only the fifth-highest peak in its range, it is the highest point in the BLM’s Selenite Mountains Wilderness Study Area. Its steep local relief gives it unusual prominence, with the summit standing about 3,100 feet above the valley floor within three miles. Officially recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, it occupies a cold desert environment where aridity, elevation, and basin-and-range topography shape hot summers, cold nights, and stark surrounding valleys.
