Nebo Hill Archeological Site
History
1
Nebo Hill in Liberty, Missouri, is a prominent former river bluff and an important archaeological site on the National Register of Historic Places. Overlooking the Fishing River valley near the Missouri River, it preserves evidence of the ancient Native American culture now called the Nebo Hill culture, which flourished there during the Late Archaic period from about 3,000 to 1,000 BCE. Archaeologists consider this culture a likely ancestor of the later Kansas City Hopewellian tradition. Artifacts found here include distinctive spearheads, axes, pottery, and the well-known Nebo Hill point, while related finds from the same culture have been identified across a much wider region.
