Seven Foot Knoll Light, built in 1855 according to some sources 1856, once stood on a rocky shoal at the mouth of the Patapsco River to guide vessels bound for Baltimore Harbor. The oldest screw-pile lighthouse in Maryland, it was assembled on site from iron parts made in Baltimore and designed for shallow bay waters, though winter ice repeatedly damaged its piles. It remained in service into the 20th century, was automated in 1949, and is remembered for keeper Thomas Jefferson Steinhise’s 1933 storm rescue of six tug crewmen, five of whom survived. Moved to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in 1988, it endures as a rare surviving bay lighthouse and notable example of 19th-century engineering.
