Craighill Channel Lower Range Front Light is an offshore lighthouse in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay that marks the first leg of the maintained channel from the Patapsco River toward Baltimore Harbor. First lit in 1873 and named for William Price Craighill, it was the Chesapeake Bay’s first caisson lighthouse and an early engineering achievement in deep, difficult water. Unusual in carrying both a range light and a general navigation light, it was modernized repeatedly before automation in 1964. After later recognition as a historic place, failed preservation efforts and neglect led to its resale in 2017. Though rusted and deteriorating, it still operates as an automated beacon.
