At 1317 Main Street in Tunica, two connected shootings grew out of a dispute over an election to the Levee Board in 1908. On March 30, 1908, J. T. Lowe and Mr. Houston exchanged words, separated to arm themselves, and met again a few minutes later; after more conversation, one shot struck Mr. Houston in the temple and killed him. A $10,000 bond was posted, allowing the shooter to resume his activities. Then on Wednesday, June 10, 1908, the dead man's daughter encountered her father's shooter on the street at this location, turned, drew a Derringer from her handbag, and shot him in the back. As he whirled and pulled his gun, she fired again, but missed when her sister grabbed her arm. On seeing his assailant, he said, “You are a lady, I won't shoot you,” then entered the building, which housed Dr. M. J. Alexander's medical practice and drugstore. He was taken by train to a Memphis hospital and survived. Neither assailant was prosecuted, and their descendants remained best of friends.
