Courthouse Burned
Military
4
In December 1864, Gen. Hylan B. Lyon invaded Kentucky with 800 men to enforce the Confederate draft law and divert Union forces from Nashville. In 23 days, his command burned seven courthouses used by Union forces. At Hartford, Lyon captured the garrison on December 20, later paroled it, and burned the courthouse. The records, kept in another building, were saved after a plea by local doctor Samuel O. Peyton.
