Pablo National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Montana, on Tribal Trust Lands of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes south of Polson, is part of the National Bison Range Complex. Most of its 2,473 acres are reservoir, with 692 acres of exposed shoreline and land that create valuable nesting habitat for birds such as green-winged teal, Canada geese, bitterns, great blue herons, and yearly nesting bald eagles. In 1996, trumpeter swans were released here to establish a regional breeding flock, apparently successfully. The refuge also supports mammals including muskrat, porcupine, badger, and skunk, along with fish such as yellow perch and largemouth bass.
