J. C. "Sonny" Gilbert Wildlife Management Area
Nature
J. C. "Sonny" Gilbert Wildlife Management Area in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, protects 7,524 acres of unusually rugged rolling hills east of the Ouachita River, about 6 miles west of Sicily Island. Created in 1980 through state purchase and donated land, it later expanded to its present size and was renamed in 2015 for J. C. "Sonny" Gilbert, a Louisiana legislator and Wildlife and Fisheries Commission member. Its creek bottoms, steep hills, and three waterfalls, including Rock Falls on Big Creek, make it distinctive within the region. Roads and trails provide access for hiking, primitive camping, hunting, and wildlife watching.
