Immanuel Church, a Protestant Episcopal church, was first established as a mission in 1832 and consecrated in 1843. Reverend Samuel George Litton served as its missionary and first rector. It was established through the efforts of Mrs. Mary Hayes Gloster, a widow from Warrenton, North Carolina, and her slaves built it as an exact copy of the church of her former home.
