On April 6, 1937, the Texas Company (Texaco, Inc.) completed this well on land owned by J. E. Guerry, and it flowed 502 barrels per day from a depth of 5,023 feet. The Guerry family had purchased the surface and one-eighth mineral rights on 127 acres in 1929 from R. L. (Bob) Slaughter, who had inherited more than 160,000 acres of the Lazy S Ranch after the death of his father, Col. C. C. Slaughter. Located in the vast Slaughter field, the well was the first of more than 2,600 active wells in Hockley County, which have produced more than 400 million barrels of oil.
