The Lewis and Clark Expedition pursued a scientific mission alongside its other purposes, with President Jefferson urging the party to study the flora and fauna along their route. When traveling through this area, they observed abundant pines and cedars, distinctive limestone formations, and many fine mines of "pitt coal" used by blacksmiths. Lewis also referred to the Big Muddy River on the northwest side of this county, and a Shawnee village stood nearby.
