Cumberland County’s second courthouse, erected in 1887, stands on this site in the approximate geographical center of the county. The site was formerly occupied by the first courthouse, built in 1855, which was destroyed by fire on the night of November 3-4, 1885, causing the loss of all records and contents. The second courthouse was erected at the direction of the County Board of Supervisors: Levi N. Brewer of Sumpter Township, James N. Ewing of Neoga Township, Charles G. Jones of Greenup Township, William H. De Bord of Crooked Creek Township, John Snodgrass of Cottonwood Township, W. Thomas Penn of Spring Point Township, Cadwell B. Fry of Woodbury Township, and John Redman of Union Township.
