John and Louise Seier National Wildlife Refuge is a 2,400-acre preserve in north-central Nebraska managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It protects part of the Sand Hills, a major remaining expanse of tallgrass and midgrass prairie shaped by geological change from the last ice age and later stabilized during the Holocene as grasses spread across exposed sands. Largely undeveloped, the refuge includes prairie, forest, and wetland, with prairie as its defining landscape. The land was donated by John and Louise Seier for wildlife habitat preservation after their family had homesteaded it in the mid-19th century.
