Covington's original town grid layout included public squares in the middle of each block for trade and commerce, where farmers brought oxen-laden carts loaded with wares and conducted business in these designated center-block locations. Traditionally called ox lots, these spaces were largely responsible for Covington's designation as a national historic district, and today they provide free public off-street parking for downtown visitors and employees.
