Randolph Caldecott, an English illustrator, artist, and sculptor who lived from 1846 to 1886, was honored in 1938 when the Caldecott Medal was named for him. The medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published during the preceding year.
