Outside Rome, Georgia, the Rocky Mountain Project combines hydroelectric infrastructure with public recreation around Heath Lake and Antioch Lake, two man-made lakes totaling 559 acres. Created as part of the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant, the area developed after Georgia Power bought the former Rock Mountain property from Berry College in the late 1970s, with the facilities and recreation areas opening about 15 years later. Owned by Oglethorpe Power Corporation and co-owned by Georgia Power, with recreation managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division, it supports fishing, swimming, and camping. Heath Lake is the main fishing lake, while larger Antioch Lake includes a man-made beach.
