Connecticut commissioned Sanctuary, a sculpture by David Boyajian and Matt Rink in September 2011, to honor the innocent lives lost in the September 11, 2001 attack on America, using materials from the World Trade Center to mark the event’s tenth anniversary. Connecticut’s 9/11 Living Memorial was created as a reflective place emphasizing the renewing qualities of plant materials, the healing serenity of the sea, and a strong visual connection to the World Trade Center site. From the Memorial Stone, visitors look directly toward the New York City skyline, where smoke from the attack was visible from this park on September 11, 2001. The memorial is dedicated to those lost, to the families who loved them, and to all generations as a promise never to forget, and it includes the names of Connecticut family members lost in the tragedy, supported by contributions from the State of Connecticut, nonprofit organizations, private companies, citizens, and a grant from the USDA Forest Service.
