Fair Lane, the home of Clara and Henry Ford, reflected the Fords' interests and achievements in developing a self-reliant lifestyle rooted in agriculture. Beyond the main house, several buildings were essential to the estate's operation. The large Powerhouse/Garage, constructed in 1914, was an uncommon engineering and architectural accomplishment, with a hydroelectric power plant that supplied electricity to the estate as well as advanced water filtration and boiler systems. Water influenced the estate's original location along the Rouge River, but over time it also damaged foundations, walls, and roofs. In 2014, restoration and repair work began in earnest on structures, courtyards, retaining walls, electrical service, and drainage lines and continues across the property. The smaller building next to the Powerhouse/Garage is the Potting Shed, and although the original glass-roofed greenhouses were removed in the 1950s for safety reasons, it remains a center for gardening activity. A section of the Riverwalk has also been restored behind the house.
