Built in 1897 by the Rutland Railroad Company for its Addison Branch, the East Shoreham Covered Railroad Bridge spans the Lemon Fair River near East Shoreham, Vermont. The company chose a covered wooden bridge instead of a more expensive iron span because traffic on the line was relatively light. That choice preserved a rare structure: Vermont’s only surviving wooden Howe truss railroad bridge. The single-span bridge carried trains until the line was abandoned in 1951. After the state acquired the bridge and surrounding land in 1972, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and remains a distinctive relic of nineteenth-century Vermont railroading.
