During the war period from 1861 to 1865, the sons of Independence County served in the Confederate army, while their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters remained steadfast to their cause with patriotic devotion. Independence County was represented by 10 cavalry companies and 13 infantry companies. In 1907, Sidney Johnston Camp, No. 863, United Confederate Veterans, Sidney Johnston Chapter, No. 135, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and many friends erected the monument.
