Around 1838, Weston’s founding father acquired a half-acre of land and established the City Cemetery as a final resting place for the town’s residents. By 1853, it had become too crowded, and businessman Theodore F. Warner donated an additional four acres. Although the exact date is unknown, by the end of the 1800s the cemetery had been renamed Laurel Hill Cemetery for the laurel trees that once grew on the hill. The first burial there is thought to have been Jane Woods in 1838, wife of Squire Jeremiah Woods, who served on Weston’s first Board of Trustees before the town was incorporated. Laurel Hill Cemetery became the burial place for many of Weston’s original residents, including businessmen, doctors, builders, dreamers, soldiers and veterans, farmers, teachers, lawmen, and their wives and children, as well as other ordinary people of varying character, all of whom together represent the spirit, legacy, and rich history of Weston.
