Picacho Peak State Park
Nature
2
Picacho Peak State Park centers on a striking desert landmark between Casa Grande and Tucson whose steep summit rises 3,374 feet and reflects a complex geologic history rather than a simple volcanic neck. Its name preserves Spanish and Oʼodham layers of meaning, and the park is known for spring wildflowers, Sonoran Desert scenery, and challenging cable-assisted routes to a small summit flat with broad views. The area also lies near the Battle of Picacho Pass, where Union cavalry from California skirmished with Confederate scouts from Texas in one of the westernmost Civil War clashes. Nearby Butterfield Overland Mail history and modern cultural references add to its significance.
