William Bigler, Governor of Pennsylvania from 1853 to 1855, was born about one mile west of here. While in office, he opposed the chartering of wildcat banks and the passage of omnibus bills. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1856 to 1861. His brother John, also born here, was Governor of California from 1852 to 1856.
