This is the oldest business still operating under the same family management. James B. Stackus, a Civil War veteran who came to the Boyne area in 1875, first operated the business. A cabinet maker by trade, he soon had a successful business, and because cabinet makers also provided caskets, his services were needed in this growing community. In 1895, his son bought the business and established what was then known as the community's first undertaking parlor. In 1901, S.B. Stackus became one of the first one hundred licensed practitioners of mortuary science. The business continued to operate at this location until 1912, when the morgue was moved to the Stackus residence on Elm Street. The furniture store closed in 1920.
