The church stood at the center of mission life. Built of adobe, it had interior plastered walls painted white with red designs, an adobe floor, and a roof made with vigas, or heavy wooden beams. Buildings to the north included a sacristy for storing priestly vestments, communal wine, and church furnishings, and the convento, the missionaries’ living quarters. The missionaries instructed new converts, said mass, and guided spiritual affairs. The friars rose at sunrise each day and rang the church bell for mass, then rang it again in the afternoons and evenings for prayers. From the convento, they wrote letters, recorded religious events, and drank hot chocolate or wine. Mass was held daily, and baptisms, marriages, and funerals were also performed. Children and newly baptized Lipan were expected to learn the catechism and take part in church activities. In all, 114 baptisms, 5 marriages, and 28 Indian burials were recorded. Additional deaths followed two smallpox epidemics that ravaged the mission, killing more than 60 people, mostly Indians, including 40 children and 27 adults.
