Garner State Park, on the Frio River near Concan in southwest Texas, opened in 1941 after Texas acquired the land in the 1930s to preserve part of the Hill Country for public use and provide Depression-era work. The Civilian Conservation Corps built its original facilities, and the park was named for former vice president John Nance Garner, who had lived and practiced law in the area. Shaped by the uplift that formed the Edwards Plateau, the park features limestone hills, mesas, canyons, clear streams, and Mount Old Baldy. Its river corridor and wooded slopes support diverse plant life, notable bird habitat, and a major recreation destination.
