Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park preserves old-growth coast redwoods and a largely undisturbed stretch of the Smith River in northern California. Established in 1929, it is one of the jointly managed Redwood National and State Parks and became part of the California Coast Ranges International Biosphere Reserve in 1983. The region has more than 8,000 years of human history, including the long presence of the Tolowa people, whose descendants still live nearby. Named for explorer Jedediah Smith, who passed through in 1826, the park also figured in the 1960s struggle over logging and preservation that helped lead to Redwood National Park.
