Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area is a 68-acre protected landscape in southern Wisconsin along the Ice Age Trail, centered on a 200-foot flat-topped butte that is Columbia County’s highest point. Overlooking the Wisconsin River Valley and Lake Wisconsin, it is prized for both scenic views and distinctive geology, with glaciated sandy loam over dolomite and sandstone shaping its prominent form on the Black River Escarpment. The area also preserves prairie and cliff vegetation such as columbine, cliff goldenrod, prairie drop-seed, and red cedar. Protection efforts began in the 1920s, and after later county ownership, the state took over management in 2007.
