At Pilot Mountain State Park, common high flyers include the red-tailed hawk, turkey vulture, black vulture, common raven, and American crow. The red-tailed hawk is a large stocky hawk with broad wings and a broad, rounded tail in silhouette; adults have a rusty red tail, and they prey mainly on small mammals. The turkey vulture is more common than the black vulture, has a long rectangular tail and a V-shaped silhouette, and lacks feathers on its head as an adaptation for feeding on carrion. The black vulture is somewhat smaller than the turkey vulture, with a short square tail, and is often seen mixed in with larger groups of turkey vultures. The common raven has a distinctive wedge-shaped tail, is much larger than the crow, holds its wings straight in flight, alternates between flapping and gliding, and scavenges while also eating garbage. The American crow has a fan-shaped tail, is seldom seen near the summit area, is identified in part by its “caw-caw” call, and feeds opportunistically on insects, small reptiles, fruits, seeds, nuts, and trash.
