Pilot Mountain is a prominent monadnock in northwestern North Carolina and one of the state’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Known to the Saura people as Jomeokee, or “great guide,” it has long served as a visible point of reference because of its isolated form and distinctive profile. The mountain is a remnant of the ancient Sauratown Mountains, with Big Pinnacle’s resistant quartzite core left standing as surrounding rock eroded away. Now protected within Pilot Mountain State Park, it is valued for its scenery, geology, trails, and connections to the Yadkin River, and it remains a defining feature of the regional skyline despite periodic events such as the 2021 wildfire.
