Thousands of park patrons once walked this path to the Promised Land Ranger Station, which was completed in 1915 and originally served as both the park office and the residence for the Forest Ranger assigned to Promised Land. The area became the heart of park operations for 45 years. Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot appointed Edgar Wilson as Promised Land's first Forest Ranger, and he was assigned here from 1902 to 1917 as the first official to live in the Ranger Station. Early rangers handled duties ranging from public relations to clearing snow from Route 390. In 1963, park operations moved south on Route 390 to the area now occupied by the maintenance complex, while the original Ranger Station continued as the full-time residence of the Park Superintendent until 1990. After serving the Commonwealth for over 80 years, the age-worn Promised Land Ranger Station was taken down in 1998.
