The Colbert family included Charley Colbert, born May 20, 1863, at Colbert in Indian Territory and died June 13, 1955; his wife Abbie Davis Colbert, born January 10, 1877, and died March 2, 1954; and their children Pauline Colbert Nix, Douglas C. Colbert, Henrietta Colbert Elliott, Frances Colbert Taylor, and James A. Colbert. Charley came to Fort Washita with his parents in youth and lived most of his life there. His father, James Allen Colbert, came to Indian Territory over the Trail of Tears in the early 1830s. His mother, Athenius Madeline Folsom, was born at Eagletown in Indian Territory. Holding the high office of auditor in the Chickasaw Nation, Charley Colbert was recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished men. When Chickasaw lands were allotted to individuals, the Fort Washita site was assigned to Abbie Davis Colbert. In 1962, the Oklahoma Historical Society acquired Fort Washita from the heirs of Charley and Abbie Colbert.
