One-room schoolhouses were part of pioneer life and continued in rural areas into modern times. Palestine School, Wisconsin's last one-room school district for grades 1-8, operated until June 1970. Its history began when the area's first settler, A.R. Hinkley, gave the land for the first schoolhouse on this site. The original log structure dated to about 1846, a frame building replaced it in 1854, and the present brick school was erected in 1928. The building later served as a kindergarten classroom for Eagle Elementary School into the 1980s.
