After settling Wellsville in 1856, Mormon pioneers made educating their children a priority after building shelter and planting crops. In 1857 they built a one-room church and schoolhouse, where Francis W. Gunnell was the first teacher and 10 students attended. By 1860 Robert Spencer was teaching at a second school and continued there for ten years, while scarce money often meant teachers were paid in produce and livestock. In 1880 the Central School was dedicated, and as the community grew it expanded into a two-story brick building; enrollment rose from 15 students in 1885 to 40 in 1889, and by 1897 Central School had become the high school. In 1908 voters approved consolidating all of Cache County except Logan City into one school district, and Wellsville students attended three schools. In 1914 the district consolidated the county's high schools, Wellsville students rode the Utah Idaho Central Railroad to Hyrum, and Central School became a junior high. During the Great Depression, Floradell began a school lunch program sponsored by the Works Progress Administration, offering hot meals for 3 cents, and after earthquake damage condemned the College Ward schoolhouse in 1933, Floradell received those teachers and students; in 1934 art, music, dance, literary, and social studies were added to the curriculum. In 1940 Wellsville Junior High replaced the demolished Central School, with classes temporarily held in the city hall, Tabernacle basement, Gunnell garage, and Floradell School basement until the new school opened. In 1965 Wellsville Junior High became Wellsville Elementary, serving students from Wellsville and Mendon. Willow Valley Middle School opened in 1999 for 6th and 7th graders from several communities, then in 2016 it became Wellsville Elementary, the town's only school, while secondary students attended school in Hyrum. As enrollment continued to grow, new high schools were built across the valley in 2016, older buildings were demolished including Wellsville Elementary in 2017, and by 2020 Wellsville Elementary had 580 students.
