General William Tecumseh Sherman was honored as Lancaster's most illustrious soldier. On November 11, 1967, The American Legion Post 111, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1380, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 40, The General Sherman Chapter of the Civil War Roundtable, and Fairfield Heritage Association dedicated his memory. As permanent custodian, the Ben Butterfield Post of the Grand Army of the Republic had received this Civil War cannon from General Sherman in 1882.
