Banner Mountain, or Banner Hill, rises near Nevada City in Northern California’s Sierra foothills, where its ridge forms the headwaters of Little Deer Creek, Little Clipper Creek, and Wolf Creek in a historic gold-mining landscape. Its moderate Mediterranean climate brings cold, wet winters, hot dry summers, and heavy snowfall on higher ground. The mountain is geologically notable for varied rock formations that create distinctive soils and support specialized plant communities, including sensitive and endangered species. In the 20th century, its fire lookout became a defining feature, and in 1971 the site hosted California’s first Women’s Liberation fire lookout crew. Its slopes were also linked to the Republic of North California, a long-running local protest farm experiment.
