From 1889 to 1929, the Belmont Spur Railroad ran from Tilson Junction to serve Belmont and its mill, crossing the Winnipesaukee River on a wooden trestle bridge below Silver Lake and crossing the Tioga River twice before ending at the depot and freight sheds on this site, with a wooden footbridge crossing the Tioga River to the mill. The railroad was discontinued in 1929, and the rails and Winnipesaukee River bridge were removed; the footbridge washed out in the flood of 1936, and the remains of the two railroad bridges over the Tioga River were removed in 1980 when the town's interceptor sewer was installed under the old rail bed. In 2009, Belmont began a multi-year revitalization program that included building a pavilion next to the mill and converting the old railroad bed into a recreational trail. Volunteers worked with town officials to have the railroad bed and depot site donated, secured Land and Water Conservation grants, and used those grants to build the pavilion and arrange the purchase of an unused 153 foot long covered bridge from Dover, New Hampshire, for one dollar. Many of those volunteers went to Dover, disassembled the covered bridge into three sections, moved it by truck to Belmont, built four new concrete abutments, and reassembled the 153-foot-long bridge into two separate bridges. One was placed behind the Belmont Mill over the Tioga River and named the Slippery Rock Bridge, and the other was placed 0.7 miles down the trail to cross the Tioga River there. The Belmont Village Spur Rail Trail now runs over two miles along the old rail bed, near the Tioga River for most of the way, ending on South Road, and provides walking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing while reflecting the dedicated work of volunteers and town government to create a low-cost recreational area for Belmont.
