Nature
Mount Major is a mountain in Alton, New Hampshire, in the Belknap Range just south of Lake Winnipesaukee. Its rocky summit offers wide views that have made it one of the region’s popular hiking destinations, with several trails reaching the top, including the Mount Major Trail, Brook Trail, and Boulder Loop. The easiest ascent follows the blue-blazed Mount Major Trail. On the west, the ridge rises only 186 feet above the col linking it to higher Straightback Mountain. Most of the mountain drains toward Lake Winnipesaukee and onward through the Winnipesaukee and Merrimack rivers to the Gulf of Maine, while much surrounding land is protected by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
