Organized as Shiloh Baptist Church in 1868 and renamed in 1931, this was the first black Baptist church in town. Located first on South Main Street near Bee Street, it was led by its first pastor, Rev. Ben Lawson, for more than thirty years. Its second location was also on Main Street, between Bartlette and West Oakland Avenue, where in 1877 the state Baptist Missionary, Educational and Sunday School Convention was organized. One of that convention's greatest works was the founding of Morris College in 1908, which it still owns and operates, and women's work became an important part of the organization. The third church was built on this site in 1910, burned in 1962, and was renovated the same year. The state Baptist Y.W.A. and state Usher's Convention were also organized here. Rev. W.S. Randolph has served as pastor since 1960, and the present church was built in 1977. In 1978 the church sponsored Shiloh-Randolph Manor, housing for the elderly, as its legacy of faith and devotion continued to expand its ministry.
