Tolland State Forest occupies 4,415 acres in the southern Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, spanning Otis, Tolland, Blandford, and Sandisfield around the 1,065-acre Otis Reservoir, western Massachusetts’s largest recreational water body. The forest began in 1925 when the state acquired cut-over lumber lands, and its recreational center developed in the 1930s after a Civilian Conservation Corps camp opened in 1933 on the peninsula extending into the reservoir. The state enlarged the property in 1966 by purchasing the reservoir and nearby land. Today it supports year-round recreation, including hiking, biking, camping, swimming, boating, skiing, and stocked trout fishing, while reflecting conservation-era land recovery in the Berkshires.
