White Grass Ski Touring Center in Canaan Valley, West Virginia, is one of the oldest dedicated cross-country ski areas in the United States. Founded in 1979 near Harrisonburg, Virginia, it moved to Canaan Valley in 1981 and took over the former Weiss Knob Ski Area, whose old lodge still serves as its day lodge. Its downhill-skiing origins left it unusually steep for a Nordic center, with about 1,200 feet of vertical rise and more than 50 kilometers of trails on the property. Known for natural snowfall, snow fencing, snowshoeing, and a low-key culture, it has also been recognized for environmentally minded operations.
