Mount Porte Crayon, a 4,770-foot summit in the Roaring Plains Wilderness of Monongahela National Forest, is the highest point of the Allegheny Front and on the Eastern Continental Divide, feeding three drainages. It is the highest point on the Roaring Plains and the sixth-highest summit in West Virginia, with an unusually broad high plateau that forms the highest and largest plateau in eastern North America. Its protected summit preserves native red spruce forest and habitat for endangered species. Named in 1940 for writer and illustrator David Hunter Strother, it is also known for severe weather, difficult access, and continuing efforts to balance conservation and development.
